What is a Youth Group?

The Combined Youth Groups of Bethlehem and St. John are an extension of the Church.   We have fun.  We rib one another, but we also encourage one another.  The goal is to grow together in our faith, to encourage one another to live according to God's Will, rather than give in to the will of the world... at school, home, or anywhere else.  The question is:  how do we go about living as Christian teens, disciples of Christ?

When we do we meet?
The Youth Groups generally meet every other Sunday evening, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  We also hold special events on other days from time to time.  For our full and complete, up-to-date schedule, and to find out what we're doing each week,

Who can come?
There are two separate Youth Groups:  one for 6th-8th graders;  another for high schoolers.  Although they are separate groups, the two groups often intermix, especially during activities such as bowling, doing service actiivities, etc.  Whether you are a Christian youth or not curious, whether you are a Lutheran or not... come join us!

Who decides what we do?
The Youth do.  Under guidance from the Youth Leader(s) and/or the Youth Committee, the Youth themselves decide on the schedule.  Week to week, we try to keep in balance the various activities between
              - Bible Study,
               - Christian Service,
               - Fun and Fellowship,
               - Nurture.

Bible Study is just that... studying the Bible together.  Learning what direction God has for today's youth.  Discover all that God has done for us in Christ Jesus and growing ever deeper into our relationship with him.  Hebrews 12:2 says "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Christian Service means putting our love into action.  Remembering always 1 John 4:19 which says "We love because he first loved us," we strive carry out Jesus' exhortation to "love your neighbor as yourself."

Fun and Fellowship means relaxing and having fun.  We hold events like Coffeehouse, Bowling Night, Pool Hall, Silly Game Night, Pictionary, Scavenger Hunts, and the list goes on...  "This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24).

Nurture means holding one another accountable.  It involves events like our Lock-ins.  A night of fun and games, but also of Bible Study, worship, and growing together as the Body of Christ.  "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:15-17).
